Send-it 10 year anniversary
Send-it is celebrating 10 years as a social enterprise on 1 May 2011. The Aberdeen based charity offers mailing, printing and fulfilment services to online retailers. As well as operating as a commercial business, Send-it provides training and work skills to adults who are disadvantaged from the work place.
Send-it owes its existence to a group of pioneering people who were motivated to ensure the continuation of a service. It was during the late 1990’s that a number of employment projects within Grampian Health Board were to be re-configured. The sheltered workshops offered training in printing, picture framing and gardening and were collectively known as Unicorn Enterprises which had been operating since 1969. However, the board commissioned Dr Bob Grove, Kings College London, to produce a report on the services and he recommended the closure of Unicorn Enterprises and proposed a range of business orientated Social Enterprises. The birth of Printability in 2001 was the direct result of the efforts of a number of people involved with the service and business consultants who did not want to lose such a valuable service.
The organisation has worked with 100’s of adults during its time and has adapted and modernised commercially and socially to meet modern demands. Over the years the mailing and distribution service has become the main business and therefore prompted the change of name to Send-it Fulfilment Solutions Ltd in April 2009. Send-it also increased its portfolio of training to include graphic design and database management.
To celebrate 10 years in business, Send-it will host an open day at their office in John Street on 12 May 2011.
